Measurement of contact pressures in machine elements, such as a cv joint, bolted joints or a ball bearing in a raceway, is extremely important. It is essential information required in fatigue and wear calculations and hence in determining the design life of a component or structure. Measurement of contact pressure can also be used in quality assurance, maintenance and safety practices,for example to check whether a bolt has been tightened or to assess component wear, where visual inspections is not possible. The aim of this work is to develop a novel prototype instrument for ultrasonics measurement of contact pressure for use in the field.
