Brown, David (1974) The relationship between insulin concentration and its effect on glucose utilization and metabolism in the isolated rat adipocyte. PhD thesis, University of York.
Abstract
It has been known for some considerable time that
diabetes is associated with some loss of pancreatic function.
In 1890 von Meering and Minkowsky showed that pancreatectomy
caused diabetes in the dog and Schaffer (1895) suggested that
the pancreatic control of carbohydrate metabolism might be
mediated through an internal secretion of the islets of
Langerhans. Studies involving pancreatic duct ligation and
blockage subsequently confirmed the importance of the islet
tissue in diabetes and Opie (1900-01) concluded from a study
of pancreatic lesions that diabetes was always associated
with a degeneration of the islet tissue.
