Navigating Relationship Challenges in Chinese People: The Power of Small Things

In contemporary China, many Chinese people negotiate relationship challenges within the mundane everyday life, where the context and daily practices of intimacy play a significant role in shaping the quality and dynamics of intimate life. Adopting an in-depth qualitative approach from a sociological perspective, this study examines the lived experiences of intimacy among Chinese couples within the broader social and cultural context of China. In particular, it investigates how small, everyday issues and interactions contribute to relationship difficulties. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 20 heterosexual Chinese individuals who had been in committed relationships for at least three years. The participants cover a diversity of genders, ages, occupations, cities of residence, and include people with disabilities. Each one-on-one interview was complemented by story-telling and participant-produced photo-elicitation. By employing thematic analysis, this study explores the notions, experiences, and practices of intimacy among participants in contemporary Chinese society. It examines how minor everyday stressors create relationship tensions, while also highlighting the resilience and motivations that drive Chinese participants to persevere through relationship struggles. Furthermore, it considers the influence of cultural norms on how participants perceive and navigate intimate relationships in ordinary life. In doing so, my findings shed light on the lived realities of intimate relationships among participants in present-day China, and also illuminate how social, cultural, and historical conditions shape their perceptions and practices of couple intimacy in day-to-day life.
