Towers, Daisy Isabelle (2025) Authorship in Exile: The translation and renarration of Mercè Rodoreda. PhD thesis, University of Leeds.
Abstract
This thesis investigates the renarration of Catalan author Mercè Rodoreda in English translation. Through an analysis of her novels La plaça del Diamant, El carrer de les Camèlies, Mirall trencat, Quanta, quanta guerra…, and La mort i la primavera, and their respective translations into English, I explore how Rodoreda’s authorship has been renarrated and presented to anglophone audiences. I critically assess the translation of Rodoreda’s work through the lens of social narrative theory, exploring how narratives shift when translating work in a new language and context
