Malone, Matthew (2015) 'Subways are for Sleeping': A Critical Edition. MMus thesis, University of Sheffield.
Abstract
This submission consists of three documents, a written thesis and two musical scores.
'Subways are for Sleeping' is a 1961 Broadway musical written by Jule Styne (Music) and Betty Comden and Adolph Green (Lyrics and Book). For this submission, I have created a critical edition of the show's score which is presented in two volumes, the first containing Act I and the second Act II as well as an appendix comprising of cut musical material, alternative orchestrations etc.
My thesis looks in depth at the genesis, development and reception of the show as well as the structure of a scholarly critical edition and how models of past editions have shaped my own. The written thesis also includes a critical report which details all edits made to the score. Due to copyright reasons, the score can not be uploaded online and has instead been provided as a hard copy to the University of Sheffield's research centre.
