Language Development in Context: Mapping the Bioecological Profiles of Multilingual Deaf Children with Cochlear Implants.
PhD thesis, University of Leeds.
Abstract
This thesis examines how spoken language development in multilingual deaf children with cochlear implants can be understood when clinical assessment data are interpreted within a bioecological framework. Drawing on Bronfenbrenner’s model, the study uses routine clinical records from an NHS Auditory Implant Centre situated in England, alongside a set of context-sensitive ecological tools to explore which developmental and contextual factors are made visible through standard assessment practices, and which remain underrepresented.
Using an exploratory multiple case study design, the thesis analyses how clinical measures document auditory access and spoken-language outcomes, and how complementary ecological tools capture aspects of children’s everyday communicative environments, including family language practices, multilingual exposure, caregiving structures, and educational coordination. The findings show that while clinical assessments provide a robust account of core auditory and linguistic development, they offer a necessarily partial view when considered in isolation. Ecological data extend this perspective by revealing how similar developmental outcomes can arise from markedly different ecological configurations, thereby reshaping the interpretation of assessment results rather than replacing them.
Interpreted through a bioecological lens, the study highlights uneven visibility across ecological layers, with microsystem and selected mesosystem processes more readily captured than macrosystemic influences and temporal change. The thesis concludes by arguing for a shift from assessment as measurement alone toward assessment as interpretation within context, and by outlining implications for the development of more comprehensive, context-informed assessment practices in research and clinical settings.
