‘This strange kind of no-man’s land’: functional/dissociative seizure research and women’s narratives of functional neurological disorder.
DClinPsy thesis, University of Sheffield.
Abstract
Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a complex and disabling condition that can affect movement, sensation, awareness, and seizure-like episodes. People living with FND may experience stigma, misunderstanding, and difficulties accessing appropriate care. Functional/Dissociative Seizures (FDS) are one form of FND.
Section one examines the development of research on FDS over the past 25 years, considering how knowledge about the condition has evolved and identifying areas where further research is needed.
Sections two explores how women experience and make sense of developing FND, with particular attention to their experiences of healthcare and relationships.
