Translation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Selected case studies of Pakistani companies

This study investigates the translation of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at an organisational level in Pakistan. The analysis is informed by a theoretical perspective based on the sociology of translation. The research design takes the form of a series of case studies, with data drawn from semi-structured interviews, combined with documentary sources and field observations. Findings highlight that the SDGs are translated at different organisational levels, as the actors involved in the translation process, interpret, modify, resist, and corrupt, the criteria underpinning the global-level goals according to their interests and power. The study also finds that the organisations often link the SDGs at a broader level with existing organisational business operations and practices, rather than effecting significant changes to their business operations and strategy, as aspired to in the global SDG agenda.
