Alruwaili, Mohammed (2022) Commanding Right and Forbidding Wrong (CRFW): A Critical Evaluation of the use of Ibn Taymiyya in the Ideology of ISIS. PhD thesis, University of Sheffield.
Abstract
In this thesis, I examine the use of the Sunni medieval scholar Ibn Taymiyya (1263-1328) in the ideology of the Islamist group ISIS, focusing primarily on the Islamic concept of Commanding Right and Forbidding Wrong (CRFW). By engaging with the writings of both Ibn Taymiyya and ISIS on CRFW, my thesis offers a systematic and comparative analysis of CRFW within the philosophy and writings of both. This analysis will generate vital insights into the ideology of ISIS, especially their use of Ibn Taymiyya and their formulation, development, and use of CRFW.
