Consent and dissent: The North Riding Appeal Tribunal, 1916-1918

This thesis explores the themes of consent and dissent for the First World War in relation to the military, the national interest and local communities in the North Riding as the North Riding Appeal Tribunal attempted to balance what was in the best interest of all three when it came to men appealing their conscription. This study asks whether the large number of men appealing to the tribunal was a demonstration of dissent against the war and conscription or was actually a forum for negotiating consent in the local area.
