Abstract
Implantable medical devices have become an integral part of modern day’s healthcare system. They can be used for telemetry and monitoring of different biological activities inside the body. They can also be employed to help the body regain certain functions such as restoring hearing sense and regulating heartbeats for arrhythmia patients. This research project suggests the use of self-resonant tag for passive sensing inside the body. The concept of passive sensing eliminates the need for any electronic components on the implant. A selfresonant tag manufactured from biodegradable material can be used to passively sense chemical changes inside the body and communicate this information with an off-body receiver by means of backscattering communications. It is proposed that a biodegradable selfresonant tag can be employed to monitor the healing process of soft tissue trauma. The tag would be implanted near a wound site in the final stages of surgery, and the status of healing tissues can be monitored through the resonance position of the tag.
