How do Front Gardens Influence Health and Well-being?

There is strong evidence for the benefits of gardens and other green spaces on human health and well-being. As front gardens (yards) are increasingly being paved over, this research evaluates how front garden landscapes can influence human health and well-being. Building on Attention Restoration Theory (Kaplan and Kaplan, 1989) and Stress Reduction Theory (Ulrich, 1983; Ulrich et al. 1991), the psycho-socio-cultural values of front gardens are examined across four distinct studies. The interdisciplinary approach uses a quasi-experimental design and mixed-methods including focus groups, questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and sampling of salivary cortisol. Conclusions drawn from the findings have implications for horticulture, landscape architecture, urban planning, and public health fields. Recommendations for policy-makers, decision-makers, and funding bodies are developed to integrate the value of front gardens in their work, particularly when dealing with front garden paving regulations, future housing developments, and streetscape greenery.
